LAND SCARS

When the topology of the land is not naturally occurring geological features. Since humans have existed we have left indelible scars on the land, often hidden from view,  from the ancient scars of the Hebrides, Henges of the Peak District to the modern fresh scars on the land. The earth never truly heals, some of these land scars are celebrated with their secrets telling the story of a past. Sometimes a recent past and often an ancient history. A drone can show the beauty and the damage.  The patterns and unique shapes of the scars remain secrets until seen by a different perspective.

Carys Kaiser AKA The Drone Lass has been flying drones for 10 years, initially just for video capabilities in her main career in TV.  She then started to experiment with aerial photography. Having successfully dabbled in wildlife photography this felt like a natural progression.

Carys initially started capturing landscapes by drone and then people. Her A Girl from Above series started in 2017 and each spring and summer she works with women to create portraits that they actually like of themselves, often approaching the most camera-shy people and helping them over come body shame and anxiety surrounding their personal image in photographs.  Focusing on finding textured backdrops of land as part of the image and thinking of creative storytelling, about characters be it the sitter or a story of the landscape.

Her latest project is examining the Land Scars of the UK, as the land shows many formations that we can’t see from the ground.  This new project like all photography projects is an ongoing project and has its first outing as part of The Old Brewery Space.

Carys is proving that a flying camera is a drone and a drone is a flying camera and the way it is used should and can be as creative as a handheld camera.

A Girl from above has been exhibited both locally, in Glossop and Hadfield, and also in Birmingham as part of the UK drone show where she received an award, then moving on to exhibit in London and Amsterdam.

Carys’ photos in all disciplines have been published in The Guardian, Digital Photographer Magazine, Film maker Magazine and on BBC online.
